Community Recreation Aquatics hosts 4th annual Water Safety Event

There was quite a splash at Black Bear Beach during Garrison Petawawa Community Recreation Aquatics 4th annual Water Safety Event.
It was held on July 22 at the tail end of National Drowning Prevention Week and combined swimming lessons, First Responders’ information booths and emergency vehicles, junior lifeguard training, CPR courses, yoga, stand-up paddleboarding, games, a food truck, giveaways and more.
It was the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began that Community Recreation Aquatics was able to host the event, and organizers were thrilled to revive it.
“We definitely came back in full swing and we are bigger and better than ever before,” said Aquatics Coordinator Marie Lemelin.
Some courses did require pre-registration, but everything was free, allowing kids of all ages and skill levels to learn how to stay safe near the water.
“It all fits ... hand in and hand,” said Lemelin. “It’s all about water safety and drowning prevention. And what is a better place than here, where we have a beautiful river so close to the community.”
There has been nothing but positive feedback from the community. All the swimming classes were quickly filled, and countless more took advantage of that sunny Friday to enjoy a day at the beach.
“We are just so thankful that the community is responsive and very excited about what is going on,” said Lemelin.
