News from the Greater Petawawa Civitan Club

Yes I am here once again with just a bit of news from The Greater Petawawa Civitan Club.

First of all I want to thank Civitan Donna Hammel for her help in writing this month’s newsletter; this is a special news release she has written for me and the club.

The Greater Petawawa Civitan Club has been very busy since the Covid Restrictions were lifted. The main focus for our club is the Mental Health Prevention Program aimed at improving the resilience of our children though the Friends and Neighbours (FAN) Club, created by the Phoenix Centre for Children and Families. Through this program, we believe in our hearts that we can reach many children who are struggling with today’s changing world and the stresses it has placed on them such as losses of loved ones, bullying, displacement, fear, racism, disabilities and so much more. This program provides virtual assistance though puppets that discuss current issues that children and families are experiencing. We have reached out to our fellow clubs in Canada to help with the funding of this progam and we (Civitan) are identified with this program as one of its supporters. We wish to thank all the clubs who generously donated to this cause and we are hoping that your support will continue for this intiative. We have been able to host our Sunday night Bingos since January 2022. It was a struggle at first with low attendance due to pandemic restrictions, however, things got a lot better as the restrictions lifted. We are now having amazing attendance with a lot of new faces and amazing feedback. We also hold a 50/50 draw at our Bingos to help offset the support for the FAN Club.

We are hosting our 2022 Battle the Bass Fishing Tournament on August 13 and the proceeds from this will also go to the FAN Club. This event is annual, and started back in 2019. It has continued to be a great fundraised and we are positive that this will be one of our major fundraising events in the future. We want to thank the Cobden Civitan Club for their help in setting this up, the Pembroke Civitan Club who partnered with us for this event, and, of course, for the rest of our fellow clubs who help us launch this event.

On October 1 we are hosting a 50’s dance, featuring Eddy and the Stingrays. They are an amazingly entertaining band and the proceeds from this event will also go to the FAN Club.

We have new members and a renewed interest from the Public in Civitan which speaks volumes to the wonderful Team members we have in our club. Without our dedicated members we could not be the success weare. Our mission is to help the children and to make our communities strong and a better place to live.
