All formations, divisions and units at Garrison Petawawa are invited to help make history by naming buildings and roads at the Department of National Defence’s (DND) Carling Campus in Ottawa.
Submitted names should honour Canadian history, heritage and notable late Canadians who have served the country. Though not every suggestion will be applied, names of distinction will be recognized and considered. Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) in collaboration with DND and Shared Services Canada (SSC) are taking over the Nortel’s former Carling Campus in Ottawa.
The $208.3 million purchase of the campus occurred in 2010. It is estimated that renovations will cost $506 million, spread out over six years. Transition costs will come in at about $77.9 million. Design and refitting work started in early 2014, and the first phase of migration is planned for the fall of 2016. Currently thousands of employees are located at more than 40 different locations around the Capital Region.
Consolidating workplaces is anticipated to save more than $900 million because of reduced overhead, leasing costs as well as cost avoidance. According to the PWGSC’s website, the move will not only reduce the number of DND work locations, but will allow the Defence Team to meet future roles and responsibilities in a new modern location. The property consists of seven roadways and twelve buildings to be rebranded.
The entire unit will be officially referred to as the National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ), but the individual parts of it will carry the chosen suggested names.
The ten buildings will be named after persons or places while the roads will be named after military battle honours, battlefields or areas of operations. The pavilion theatre will be named after a historical person, place or event and the KAF Cenotaph building will be named after a place, event or historical person that served in Afghanistan. Ideas and suggestions should be sent to CWO Bill Richards, Bill.Richards@ forces.gc.ca, no later than April 13.
