Carol Sollows has been volunteering in the community for more than 16 years.

She has selflessly dedicated herself to making the area a better place by sharing her expertise as an accountant and financial advisor, and committing herself to numerous committees and organizations. She has demonstrated a true passion for the education of women and children as well as the promotion of women in ecumenical roles.

For her efforts, she was recognized with a Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. Mayor of Petawawa Bob Sweet presented it to her on Aug. 8 during a pre-council ceremony.

“I’m quite excited and surprised,” said Sollows.

She never expected to receive such a medal and was surprised to receive an email from the Governor General’s Office announcing her as one of the chosen recipients. Her husband Wayne, Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre (PMFRC) Executive Director Claudia Beswick and Former Executive Director of Canadian Baptist Women of Ontario and Quebec Brenda Mann had all worked together to ensure that she would receive this distinction.

Both organizations have been part of her volunteer repertoire, and she has left them stronger through her tireless work.

“What I like to do in the community is give back,” said Sollows. “I’m a CPA/CGA, an accountant, and I like to throw my hat in the ring at organizations and say, ‘I’ll join your board and be your treasurer.’”

Her devotion to her volunteer work is inspiring. She has shown leadership and strength, and more importantly, she has always demonstrated kindness, loyalty and care. She has an aura of warmth and goodwill that deeply touches those she involves herself with.

“I think it is important to be a part of your community and to give back freely of your time and energy to help organizations that do great work within your community,” said Sollows. “For me, it is second nature. I just think it is really important to help your fellow person in your community.”

She recently joined the Board of Directors at First Step Options Centre in Pembroke, where she will continue to help those in need.

The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers is an official honour created by the Crown and is presented to citizens across Canada. It celebrates a wide range of voluntary contribution.

“Our commitment to Canada strengthens when we collectively pay homage to those who distinguish themselves by virtue of their talents, their generosity, and their service to their community and their country,” said Sweet.
