The Ottawa Valley 8-Ball League in Petawawa is inviting people of any skill level to join - from complete beginner to the most seasoned player. “There is always laughs and good times to be had,” said organizer Jamie Richard. “It is a very relaxed environment.”

Mixed teams of five compete against one another every Thursday night, matching up five times during the night. Though they are not technically a competitive league, there is a championship at the end of the season in the Spring. “We have prizes for the top shooters, for top averages, top run-outs and in different categories and, of course, the championship gives people bragging rights,” said Richard.

This league has been in existence for the past decade, and some players have been playing for longer, many of them regulars on the pool scene.

They are always striving to include newer members, however, and it isn’t uncommon for near professionals to share tips and tricks with greenhorns. “It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner,” said Richard, noting the team environment is very supportive. “As long as you have a positive attitude and can hold a pool cue, you are welcome,” he added.

This recreational league also helps create links between members of the community and surrounding areas, giving people an activity to enjoy in the colder months. The Great Canadian Warehouse is also an excellent location, offering 12 different tables.

Registration for the league is Sept. 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Great Canadian Warehouse. Team sign-ups are recommended, but single players are always welcomed and accommodated. The registration fee per team is $100 and it costs $10 per night. At times, there are also free nights for the league players to practice and refine their skills.

Players must be 19 years and older. For more information, contact Jamie Richard at 613-687-7447 extension 222.
