Is there anything better than eating a cupcake? Yes, there is - eating a cupcake while helping the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) Renfrew County Animal Centre.
The local branch has joined others across the country for National Cupcake Day. This event encourages people in the community to purchase cupcakes at select locations, donate cupcakes to be sold or host cupcake parties with proceeds going to the animal centre.
“The end result is to help animals who are homeless or abused or unwanted,” said volunteer Lea Thompson.
People are encouraged not only to partake on the official day on Feb. 26, but also raise funds and support cupcake events throughout the proceeding weeks. Every dollar raised by the sale of these treats stays in the area to help the animals at the centre.
National Cupcake Day has been gaining momentum and last year, the Renfrew County team was the top event fundraisers.
“Because we rock,” said Thompson. “We were working at every single weekend, we were at events, we were at stores, and anywhere we could get into.”
National Cupcake Day started in New Zealand and Australia and spread abroad as the popularity of the event gained traction. The idea arrived in Canada six years ago and was enthusiastically adopted by the organization.
“They shared everything with us,” said Thompson. “They shared their templates ... all their online fundraising because they knew it was going to help animals.”
The Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre has moved from its Petawawa location to Pembroke at 115 Woodcrest Drive. The facility is open Monday to Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
