The Towneplace Suites by Marriott is building a new hotel in Petawawa.

Located on the corner of Murphy Road and Petawawa Boulevard, the new hotel will boast 80 units, each equipped with galley-style kitchens, designed to be a comfortable place for longer stays.

“It is a very exciting project for the town,” said Mayor Bob Sweet at the ground breaking on Nov. 17. “It is a great move forward for us.”

The location was chosen after careful, and several years of deliberation.

“We have specialized going into secondary communities that have a lack of accommodations,” said owner David Hornstein. “I am always looking for different locations to do possible development.”

It seemed to him and to the rest of his team that there was a lot of demand for a long-term stay hotel that would accommodate CAF members, dignitaries and family members visiting for an extended period. As such, he set out to fill the gap.

“They are all suites and we are going to have a certain number of one bedroom units,” said Hornstein, describing this interesting features of the hotel.

He estimates the $10-12 million project will lead to about 25 full-time and part-time positions in the community and help bolster the economy. Construction on the new hotel should be completed by 2019 and take about 18 months.

Though he has opened hotels in other locations, this isn’t just an investment for him. He wants to see the hotel thrive and satisfy its clients.

“We buy to hold and operate,” said Hornstein. “We take great care to build them. We make sure it is done well, done right and looks good well into the future.”
