The first six people whose names will grace the walls of the Petawawa Sports and Entertainment Hall of Fame (PSEHOF) have been announced.
The Hall of Fame is located at the entrance of the Petawawa Civic Centre, and will recognize past, present and future athletes, community builders, and entertainers who call or have called Petawawa home.
After very careful deliberation, a committee selected six illustrious recipients to make up the very first class to be inducted into the PSEHOF. Their names were announced publicly on April 26.
“I think that people will say that this is an extraordinary class of six individuals,” said PSEHOF President Gary Serviss. “People around here may be shocked to learn who has lived in and comes from this town.”
In the sports wing, Former NHL forward Ray Sheppard and Former Detroit Red Wings centreman Roy Giesebrecht have been selected. For their awe-inspiring musical talents, Canadian country music artist Jason Blaine and world-renowned opera singer Joshua Hopkins were both chosen for the entertainment wing. Petawawa Ski Hill founder Fred Molson and dedicated sports and community leader Willard Mohns will be named under the builders’ wing.
To make this non-profit project a reality, it required the partnership and support of many. The Petawawa Fundraising Committee notably donated $15,000, Rona Petawawa donated the materials, Glenergy donated lighting, the Town of Petawawa and its Park and Recreation staff helped with the construction, and the Petawawa Public Library staff, who worked with the PSEHOF committee to find a spot for the hall of fame.
“The individuals are well chosen and are a cross-section of our community,” said Mayor Bob Sweet. “They’ve contributed enormously to the quality of life that we enjoy.”
A 2018 PSEHOF Induction ceremony will be held on the evening of June 15 at the Petawawa Civic Centre with former Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Hector Clouthier as the master of ceremonies. Many of the inductees or their family members will also be in attendance. Cost for the ceremony is $5 and tickets are available at the town’s Parks and Recreation Department as well as the Petawawa Public Library.
