The Silver Threads Seniors Cub will be having Zumba classes again this summer with Ed Nicholson as the instructor. This class is geared to seniors and is a fun activity for everyone who likes to dance and enjoys music. We will be offering these classes beginning in July. We will inform you of the day and time as soon as we get all of the information.

Come out for Line Dancing on Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. and join in the boot scooting boogie bunch. You can hone your skills when you go dancing at any of the events in the community.

The winners of the Friday evening Euchre games were: Kay Saunders, Lou Laveriennere, Lou McEvoy, Jeanette Mckay, Jean Hynes. Come out on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. for the regular Euchre and Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. for Bid Euchre.

Don’t forget Weight Watchers meet in the downstairs hall every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.; this is a great group of folks who assist each other in maintaing their weight in a highly supportive group. We have an elevator for anyone with mobility concerns.

The Pembroke Log Cabin Quilters will be holding a Quilt Show at the Civic Centre on May 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and May 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $6 and there is a raffle on a quilt called “Batik Explosion” - the tickets are being sold for $2 each or three for $5. This is the most fantastic work of art that you will be viewing anywhere in the world. Don’t miss this event, you will be blown away by the sewing skills and the absolute genius of these quilters.

We are all having our eyes done (as we say), so here is some information on cataracts.

What is a cataract? A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye. Like a camera, the normal eye has a transparent lens that focuses images at the back of the eye. While the camera focuses the image on a film, the eye focuses the image on the retina. If the lens is cloudy, the image on the retina is not clear and the vision becomes blurry. Cataracts develop as we grow older. They are due to the aging process of the proteins contained in the natural lens.

Cataracts may develop earlier: in people with diabetes or glaucoma; following traumatic eye injuries; following the intake of some medications (for example steriods); with smoking; and poor nutrition. In rare cases, cataracts are present at birth. (The Ottawa Hospital)
