Two Canadian First World War soldiers found in France
OTTAWA - The Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) have identified the remains of a First World War soldier found in a field outside Arleux-en-Gohelle, France, as those of Sergeant James Alexander Milne from Kincardineshire, Scotland, and then Calgary, Alberta. British Second World War airman laid to rest after
DND assisted in his identification
OTTAWA - The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence laid to rest Second World War airman Sergeant Wilfred Lawson of the Royal Air Force at the Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery on March 16, 2017. The Department of National Defence (DND) assisted in the identification of this missing British airman when his remains were found three years ago. Click here for more.
Legion donates $2,500 to 3 RCR cadets
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 517 donated a cheque worth $2,500 to the 2642 - 3 RCR Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. The money is from the Legion’s Poppy Fund and most went to cover the cost of the Cadet biathlon team’s suits. Click here for more.

Historic UOVHSAA Hockey Championship win for Valour girls team
The UOVHSAA Girls high school hockey season wrapped up February 22nd at the Petawawa Civic Centre with the Frozen Four playoffs. The Club is hanging in there, and we hope that sunshine and warm weather will soon be coming our way. I sure would like to have a nice clean vehicle and trade my winter boots for some light footwear. We are so lucky to have a town maintenance crew that keeps our sidewalks and roads in tip top shape. You still have to be vigilent as there are some ice patches around the parking lots and walkways. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge. To mark this monumental event in Canada’s history, the Petawawa Legion is holding a paint night that features the Vimy memorial. Well here we are at the end of February, then into March and I hear a lot more snow is on the way. I can remember when we had a lot more snow when I was younger and again in the late 60s and 70s and I have to say, I love it. We always had lots of food in the house and lots of wood in the winter, so if we got a big snow storm we were fine for a few days until we got shovelled out.
