Social networking refers to a category of Internet applications which help connect friends, business partners, or other individuals using a variety of Web 2.0 tools. Over 170 such sites exist and the list keeps on growing. These sites have been developed to target specific groups. Most of them are general in nature but some exist specifically for music lovers, for mothers, for computers and video games or for a particular ethnic group. Some are by invitation only but most are open to all. You will easily recognize sites such as Facebook and Twitter because they have become part of our normal day-to-day language.

Hackers will use any means possible to improve their condition, particularly their financial one. An Ottawa Citizen article reported that hackers are luring Facebook members to open an attachment to help them reset their login credentials. What these users do not realize is that they are opening an attachment that contains malicious password stealing software. Quoting the article, “With Facebook as your lure, you potentially have 400 million people that can click on the attachment. If you get 10 percent success, that’s 40 million.”

Nothing is fool proof but there are things you can do to make it more difficult for hackers: apply good password habits; recognize phishing attempts and know what to do if they occur; be aware of malware/spyware and ensure your anti-virus software is up-to-date and working properly; and apply good identity management practices.
