From Jan 19 to 27, residents embraced the coldest season and came out in droves to Cabin Fever 2019 held at the Petawawa Civic Centre and surrounding areas.

Though many favourites such as the Petawawa Fire Department Chili Cook-Off, free skating, the Legion Breakfast hosted by Branch 517, the Snow Drag Races, the Lion’s Trivia Night and Euchre Tournament were on the schedule, a few new events were added such as Beards and Brews and Fat Bike Races.

Biking in the snow? It’s more popular than you think. GearHeads brought out some of their fat bikes with tires that can withstand the rigours of winter. Races, as well as demonstrations, were organized.

For the first year ever, the Beards and Brews event was introduced to the roster. Bearded men were invited to put their whiskers on the line and compete in different categories. All participants received a gift bag filled with products from the Valley Gentlemen Beard Essentials. While not admiring each other’s beards, they got to enjoy brews from Ontario breweries.

Throughout the festival’s two week run, visitors had the chance to lace up some skates and hit the Civic Centre Arena three separate times.

At the Snow Drag races on Jan. 26, riders pitted their machines against one another at the Pembroke and Area Airport, hoping to be the first to cross the 500 feet snow track.
