Tales from the Penalty Box coming to Pembroke September 19
Players from the National Hockey League (NHL) are laying it bare and uncensored at the upcoming Tales from the Penalty Box comedy show.
Former NHLers Matthew Barnaby and Andre Roy are spilling their secrets on the stage and, with over 5,000 minutes in penalties between them, the truth about their coaches, teammates, rivals and even themselves is sure to make for a good time.
“They get to say things from the heart and as candid as they can,” said show Moderator Darcy Lynch. “Sometimes it is stuff they can’t say on the radio or tv shows.”
The often sold-out show has been making its way throughout Canada and the United States, busting guts along the way. It is making its way to Pembroke on Sept. 19, bringing these humorous tales to “Hockey Town Canada”.
“It seems like we are more appreciated in the smaller cities,” said Lynch.
Both he and Barnaby have strong ties to the Ottawa Valley and are excited at the opportunity to have their show come to the area and meet with old friends as well as ardent fans.
Unlike some comedy shows, these stand-ups won’t just disappear after the proverbial curtain falls. Barnaby and Roy are staying behind to talk to fans, sign autographs and answer questions people may have about their career.
It also blends together unscripted funny stories from Barnaby and Roy’s time on the ice with a charitable spin as money raised at the event goes to support the Movember Foundation. The charitable organization was chosen due to its great work with men’s health.
“What we liked with our partnership with them is that it is not specific to one cause,” said Lynch, pointing out that they support research and awareness of prostate and testicular cancer, as well as mental health issues.
“We all have a personal connection to it and covered all bases for everybody involved,” he added.
The Movember Foundation is known for its moustache growing challenge in November, but many people don’t realize that the organization works around the clock to fund men’s health, helping men live long, happy, healthy lives.
The show will be held at the Best Western Pembroke Inn and Conference Centre. It starts at 8:30 p.m. and tickets are $25. Based on the success of previous shows, they are likely to sell out quickly, so it is recommended that those interested in attending purchase tickets in advance.
“We don’t want people to be disappointed,” said Lynch.
