Operation Clean Sweep: Spring is in the Air

Cartoon trash can picking up garbage
By WO Gary Harrington

It is encouraging to see that many of our residents of the Residential Housing Units have taken the initiative to get an early start to spring cleaning, taking advantage of the down time we have by removing the scars that old man winter has left behind. In particular our furry friends have definitely left their mark. It’s not only from a good neighbour perspective to clean up after them, but also for environmental reasons. No one should have to endure the sights and smells of what was under the snow.

Our residents of the apartments can also get an early start to spring by inspecting their individual garbage cages to ensure they are in good working order, clean and inspect their storage cages in the basement of their apartment to ensure they meet all fire and safety regulations.

Residents of The RHUs, I am confident that once the raking is done and the debris picked up that our community will again be a safe and clean place to live and play.

There are, at this time, some restrictions: for example the dog parks are closed and the playgrounds within the RHUs have been closed. I assure you that once the restrictions are lifted, you will be the first to know.

Taking the lead: Many of you as a family walked about your part of the neighbourhood with a garbage bag and picked up debris along the roadways and, in some cases, along hedges and fence lines. The level of responsibility and genuine concern for your community is impressive. Thank you!

We can all be part of the solution by being proactive and not waiting for someone to come along and do it for us.

All residents can do their part by following a few simple steps:

  1. Ensure that waste is in the proper bin;
  2. Break down and bundle large cardboard, in particular TV and furniture boxes;
  3. Return your bins to your residence ASAP after collection;
  4. Do not put out garbage until the evening before pickup;
  5. Use only black bags for normal garbage;

Please refer to the Ottawa Valley Waste Reduction Centre Collection Schedule for clarity of waste management queries.

ATTENTION: BULK PICKUP:
Bulk Item pickup is the week of 25 to 29 May 2020. Do not place bulk items out before 24 May 2020.

Please have a look at the chart on your collection schedule to ensure that you following the guidelines for bulk pickup items or refer to www.ovwrc.com.

Note: Until further notice there WILL NOT be an E-Waste collection on the 09 May 2020 at the Petawawa Civic Centre. Collection will be determined at a later date.

If there are any questions you may have in regards to your housing unit (5W’s) please refer to the Occupancy Handbook online at www.cfha-alfc.forces.gc.ca or the Garrison Administrative Instructions, or simply give CFHA a call.

We all have a responsibility in keeping our environment a clean and safe place to live and play. I am sure that the residents of the Residential Housing Units will do what is right.

Two questions: ‘So what if I do?’ and ‘So what if I don’t?’ both have consequences, however you will always come up with the right answer.

On behalf of The Canadian Forces Housing Agency and 4th Canadian Division Support Services Petawawa, I extend their gratitude and remind our residents to be safe and continue to follow the guidelines and procedures for COVID 19.
