Local author Luke Murphy releases newest thriller Finders Keepers
Ottawa Valley international bestselling writer Luke Murphy has released his newest thriller, Finders Keepers, for his Calvin Watters Mysteries fans.
It is book four in this series and sees Calvin Watters on the mean streets of Las Vegas, helping solve a string of escort murders. Despite vowing to never return to his former corrupt life, this case pulls him back to the seediest district of Vegas, where his past mingles dangerously with his present.
His bad-guy-turned-good character has become beloved by his readers, and this story sees more of his past revealed.
As with every book release, he is nervous about public reaction.
“It’s really nice that people enjoyed my first books but now the expectations are up here,” he said.
The ebook was officially released on July 23. The paperback copy is now available online and will soon be stocked on local bookshelves.
Inspiration for this book came from the most unlikely of places: his family doctor. During a visit, they began talking about methods of murder and famous homicide cases.
“I left his office and found this fascinating case, so I sort of used that in my new novel,” said Murphy.
He manages to intertwine a medical oddity masterfully into his thriller, keeping readers at the edge of their seats while they try to discover who is doing these dastardly deeds. All while Calvin Watters is trying to outwit his sniper nemesis, hellbent on taking revenge.
Writing stories is something Murphy solely does for fun - though earning the title of international bestseller is a bonus.
He has a day job as a high school teacher, so he doesn’t stress himself about hitting daily word quotas. This allows him to keep writing as a passion of his.
“I love my characters, I really do,” said Murphy, adding he loves the worlds he builds. “... They are like real people. I don’t write superheros that can’t get hurt, that never make the wrong decision.”
And that realism is felt on every page of his novel.
He also writes the Charlene Taylor Mysteries, which follows a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) detective as she confronts serial killers, kidnappers and other criminals.
He plans to continue writing and expanding his series but is currently unsure which direction he will take. However, he isn’t above being swayed by his readers and has a survey asking for people’s opinions on what character he should work on next.
Murphy was a professional hockey player before retiring in 2006. He is currently a teacher in Shawville, living there with his wife and three daughters. His sports column, “Overtime”, was nominated for the 2007 Best Sports Page in Quebec and won in 2009. He has also worked as a radio journalist.
