Be Bear Wise
Attention: ours
GARRISON PETAWAWA - Believe it or not, black bears prefer to forage in forested areas away from people, but they may be attracted to populated areas by accessible food sources that are simply too good to pass up. The best way to avoid finding black bears in your yard is to ELIMINATE or, at the very least, SECURE ATTRACTANTS like food waste. By eliminating attractants, bears will be less tempted to spend time in residential areas.
Tips to avoid attracting bears to your yard:
- Consider modifying existing garbage cans to be more difficult to access or buying a bear-proof model;
- Keep garbage cans in a shed or garage if available;
- Freeze food scraps and place in green bins the day of collection;
- Rinse recyclable items before placing them in the recycling bin;
- Wait until the morning of pick-up to place bins at the curb;
- Never leave pet food outside;
- Don’t feed birds between April and October (they have plenty of food elsewhere);
- Clean the BBQ grease traps regularly or store BBQs inside a shed or garage;
- Collect fruit and vegetables from gardens and trees, and pick up fallen fruit instead of allowing it to rot on the ground; and
- Rinse green bins after collection day.
If you are experiencing a nuisance bear problem, report the incident to the Ontario Bear Wise Reporting Line at 1-866-514-2327 and remove or manage attractants where possible. The Ontario Bear Wise Reporting Line operates 24 hrs/day between April 1 and Nov 30.
If a bear is posing immediate danger (i.e. physical contact with a person or pet, breaking into a building, appears to be focused on people more than food), call the Military Police at local 5444, 613-588-5444, or 911.
For additional information, contact 4 CDSB Petawawa Environmental Services at environment@forces.gc.ca or 613-687-5511 local 5960.
Attention: ours
