Plunging temperatures and swirling snow on Feb. 25 gave participants in the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) fundraiser a small taste of what it is like to be homeless in the winter.
Bundled up in winter gear and sporting CNOY toques, about 256 people in 50 teams walked two or five kms through the streets of Pembroke, raising money and awareness along the way.
This year’s goal was to raise $100,000 for The Grind Pembroke, an objective that was not only met but surpassed with over $105,000 in donations - with more trickling in.
“Well, this is exciting,” said Jerry Novack, The Grind Pembroke Executive Director. “We weren’t expecting the success that we are getting today, but thank you to everybody who reached out to the community. It has been amazing to see the support we are getting.”
The Grind serves marginalized, low-to-no-income community members in Renfrew County. The organization provides a safe environment where clients can receive non-clinical services to help them get them back on their feet.
As part of their desire to help vulnerable people in the community, they have moved to a bigger location at 273 Victoria St, where they offer a variety of resources including a coffee house and community kitchen, outreach programming, shelter services, youth services, and warming station.
“Your dollars go to help each and every one in the community that needs our assistance,” said volunteer Deacon Adrien Chaput to the large gathered group. “We help get them out of the cold, we help provide them with good nutritious food ... and we also help meet with them to provide them assistance navigating through our partners here in our community.”
With rising inflation, more people have been struggling to make ends meet. The Grind can help people understand the complex and changing world of social assistance to keep them off the streets. “The Grind Pembroke is one of those places where we all know that the community comes together for a common cause,” said Emcee Dave Henderson, thanking all sponsors.
The top fundraising team is Morning Muffin Marchers, who raised $11,195, followed by the Calvin & Wesley United on a Mission with $8,480 and the Roamin’ Catholics with $4,250.
The top individual fundraisers are Ruth Orr with $5,190, Declan Rowan with $3,990 and Deacon Adrien Chaput with $3,780.
Those who raised over $1,000 received a gold pin to wear on their lapel while walking.

« Vos dollars aident chacun et chacune dans la communauté qui a besoin de notre aide », a déclaré le bénévole Deacon Adrien Chaput à la foule. « Nous les aidons à sortir du froid, nous leur fournissons une nourriture nutritive de qualité... et nous les rencontrons également pour leur fournir de l’aide dans la navigation avec nos partenaires ici, dans notre communauté ».
Avec l’inflation croissante, de plus en plus de personnes ont des difficultés à joindre les deux bouts. The Grind peut aider les gens à comprendre le monde complexe et en constante évolution de l’assistance sociale pour les maintenir hors des rues.
« The Grind Pembroke est l’un de ces endroits où nous savons tous que la communauté se rassemble pour une cause commune », a déclaré l’animateur Dave Henderson, remerciant tous les sponsors.
L’équipe qui a levé le plus de fonds est Morning Muffin Marchers, qui a recueilli 11 195 $, suivie de Calvin & Wesley United on a Mission avec 8 480 $ et Roamin’ Catholics avec 4 250 $.
