Local Immigration Partnership – Lanark and Renfrew County (LIP) collaborated with the Town of Petawawa and the Petawawa Business Association Network (PBAN) to host the vibrant Culture Connect Newcomer Container Market and the exciting Petawawa Cricket Showdown.
June 22 started with the opening of the Container Market, featuring a diverse display of cultural crafts, foods, and performances by artists Dharma Dharma, Randa Teschner, and Navid Miraftab. Concurrently, a Cricket 101 clinic was held, followed by a friendly match between the Ottawa Tuskers and the Ottawa Valley Strikers. This year marks the third anniversary of cricket in Petawawa, initiated at Garrison Petawawa where soldiers were able try the sport in the 2022 iteration of Culture Connect.
“When planning the newcomer container market, we explored additional activities to enrich the day, leading us to re-invite the Tuskers,” said Jodi Bucholtz, manager of LIP, who emphasized the integrated nature of the event.
Mayor Gary Serviss had the honour of bowling the first ball of the match and discovered a spark of newfound talent for the sport, after a few practice bowls.
“Trying new sports is always fascinating,” he said.
Although sports fields in Petawawa are not large enough for standard cricket games, which can require a diameter of up to 150 meters, integrating cricket into the town’s sports offerings is a possibility as it aligns with Petawawa’s goal of being an inclusive community. The dual events highlighted the extraordinary skills of community newcomers, both in sports and craft. Additionally, a Slow-Pitch for Awareness tournament, organized by Awareness Athletics Inc. to raise autism awareness, ran simultaneously.
The event also addressed the challenges faced by rural communities, including declining populations and youth out-migration. By fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, the Petawawa Cricket Showdown and Culture Connect enhanced connections between newcomers and established residents, promoting integration and addressing social issues like racism and discrimination.
“As we observe growth in our newcomer populations in Renfrew County, it’s crucial for our newest members to feel a sense of belonging, which is fundamental for community integration,” Bucholtz added.
The success of Culture Connect was made possible through collaboration with the town and PBAN, along with the support of 40 community partners. Special thanks were extended to sponsors including the City of Pembroke, the County of Renfrew, and the Renfrew County Community Future Development Corporation.

Parallèlement, une clinique de Cricket 101 a eu lieu, suivie d’un match amical entre les Ottawa Tuskers et les Ottawa Valley Strikers. Cette année marque le troisième anniversaire du cricket à Petawawa, initié à la Garnison Petawawa où les soldats ont pu essayer ce sport lors de l’édition 2022 de « Culture Connect ».
« En planifiant le marché conteneur pour les nouveaux arrivants, nous avons exploré des activités supplémentaires pour enrichir la journée, ce qui nous a amenés à réinviter les Tuskers », a déclaré Jodi Bucholtz, gestionnaire du PLI, qui a souligné la nature intégrée de l’événement.
Le maire Gary Serviss a eu l’honneur de lancer la première balle du match et a découvert un talent nouveau pour ce sport, après quelques lancers d’entraînement. « Essayer de nouveaux sports est toujours fascinant », a-t-il dit.
Bien que les terrains de sport à Petawawa ne soient pas assez grands pour des matchs de cricket standards, qui peuvent nécessiter un diamètre allant jusqu’à 150 mètres, l’intégration du cricket dans les offres sportives de la ville est une possibilité, car cela s’aligne avec l’objectif de Petawawa d’être une communauté inclusive. Les événements en parallèle ont mis en lumière les compétences extraordinaires des nouveaux arrivants de la communauté, tant dans le sport que dans l’artisanat. De plus, un tournoi de balle lente pour la sensibilisation, organisé par Awareness Athletics Inc. pour sensibiliser à l’autisme, s’est déroulé simultanément.
L’événement a également abordé les défis auxquels sont confrontées les communautés rurales, y compris la diminution de la population et la migration des jeunes. En favorisant une atmosphère accueillante et inclusive, la compétition de cricket de Petawawa et « Culture Connect » ont renforcé les liens entre les nouveaux arrivants et les résidents établis, favorisant l’intégration et abordant des enjeux sociaux tels que le racisme et la discrimination.
« Alors que nous observons une croissance de notre population de nouveaux arrivants dans le comté de Renfrew, il est crucial que nos nouveaux membres se sentent un sentiment d’appartenance, ce qui est fondamental pour l’intégration communautaire », a ajouté Bucholtz.
